Hearing Loss
Are You Hearing Everything Life Has to Offer?

Hearing loss is a natural part of getting older. Already at age 20, we've lost the ability to perceive some of the sounds infants can hear. By the time we reach 30 or 40, subtle—but significant—losses have begun to occur. Once we reach our 80s, more than half of us suffer from significant hearing loss.

With the added factor of prolonged exposure to high intensity noise at work and at home, hearing impairment is becoming even more common at an earlier age. More than half of all people with hearing challenges today are still in the workforce.
It's a Noisy World Out There

Noise levels have increased everywhere. From hair dryers to leaf blowers, lawnmowers, snowmobiles, iPods®, freeway traffic, surround sound speakers and more, we constantly expose our ears to damaging levels of noise.

And that's just at home. Our work environments are becoming increasingly loud as well. Some of the noisiest workplaces are those where firefighters, factory workers, farmers, teachers, construction workers and musicians spend a significant part of their day.

Other factors that may contribute to hearing loss include:

* blockage of the ear canal by an object or accumulated cerumen (earwax)
* diseases, infections or medical disorders
* medications and treatments like chemotherapy or antibiotics
* physical trauma to the ears or head

The first step in treating hearing loss is to recognize its most common signs.
* It sounds to you as though people are mumbling or speaking more softly than they used to.
* You are turning up the volume on the TV or radio above the level where others typically listen.
* You can hear people talk, but you have difficulty understanding the words.
* You frequently ask people to repeat themselves.
* You can't always hear the doorbell or telephone clearly.
* Family, colleagues and friends suggest you might have a hearing problem.
* It has become difficult to understand a speaker at a business meeting or service.
* It is especially difficult to hear women or children speak.
* You often hear a ringing or buzzing in your ears.
* You might notice a slight muffling of sound after noise exposure.
* It can be difficult to hear or understand people when you leave a noisy area.

Rideau Hearing will not be undersold on identical products and services, a written quote from a competitor detailing the product make, model and service plan in writing and must be provided within 90 days of purchase. The quote must be verifiable by phone as an actual offer available to the general public to qualify for price matching.

We guarantee you will hear better everywhere even in noise or your money back, noting not all hearing losses are appropriate for hearing aids and that individual results will very. All money back is a time limited offer noted in various advertisements in the forms of fliers and newspaper advertising. A printout of the website or any portion thereof does not qualify as an advertisement. Unless otherwise discussed a return fee may be applicable. We retain the right to refuse service or to provide referal to another hearing care professional. All of our hearing aids come with a trial period that is a minimum of 28 days, it may be extended by request. DVA, RCMP, NIHB, WSIB, DND and WCB are exempt from our service and maintenance plan.
A New Technology
MINNEAPOLIS, April 2, 2009 - Starkey Laboratories, Inc., one of the world's leading hearing technology companies, is proud to introduce S Series™ with Drive Architecture™, the extraordinary new family of hearing aids that combines art and science to create unparalleled levels of performance, comfort and personalization. S Series, developed using Starkey's evidence-based design approach, is available in custom and a first-ever full line of receiver-in-canal (RIC) options.

At the heart of every S Series hearing instrument is Starkey's newest, state-of-the-art integrated circuit platform, Drive Architecture, designed to deliver maximum performance, power and patient satisfaction. Powered by multi-core technology, Drive Architecture utilizes independent and fully programmable open architecture processors to efficiently carry out tasks in parallel by using simultaneous multi-threading technology. Drive Architecture triples the processing power of previous platforms, allowing for super efficient, high-speed multitasking of signal processing algorithms for better performance while significantly improving battery life over Starkey's previous technology platform.

"S Series by Starkey is the biggest leap forward in hearing aid technology in years," said Jerry Ruzicka, President of Starkey. "Our successful meld of art and science creates broader appeal among a new generation of hearing professionals who place equal emphasis on technology and design for their patients. No need to sacrifice when you can have it all."

Features

The S Series boasts Starkey's newest features based on proven best-in-class innovations including:

* PureWave Feedback Eliminator, delivering broader bandwidth, faster processing and intelligent artifact elimination to ensure patients get the best possible performance in every listening environment. S Series models offer up to 25dB of added stable gain for the highest broadband gain margin in the industry.
* Acoustic Scene Analyzer (ASA) is Starkey's newest integrated system for managing noise and preserving speech recognition that instantly classifies incoming signals based on unique acoustic characteristics. ASA seamlessly selects and implements the most appropriate algorithms individually or collectively, providing the best possible acoustic response at every moment in time. This results in the highest level of patient comfort and clarity in noise, while emphasizing speech preservation.
* InVision Directionality is designed to perform best in highly complex backgrounds of noise. The industry-leading system boasts the highest DI scores and lowest operational noise floor, helping patients significantly increase their speech understanding in noise.
* AudioScape is Starkey's new acoustic pattern recognition system that uses patented real-time environment detection and classification to adapt to any listening environment by seamlessly adjusting to a patient's preferred settings. A channel-specific signal-to-noise ratio calculation ensures that speech is always given the priority.
* Automatic Telephone Solutions (ATS) automatically detects telephone usage and adjusts to the optimal acoustic frequency response for telephone listening.
* T² (touch-tone) allows your patients to control their hearing aids using any cell or touch-tone phone, avoiding the need to carry additional hardware. T² discreetly and instantly classifies the touch-tone signal and automatically adjusts.

Styles

As the recognized expert in custom devices, Starkey has integrated breakthrough features directly into hearing aids and fitting software so custom products are guaranteed to fit the first time. The company's master craftsmanship in custom fittings and open vent options combined with industry-leading feedback cancellation results in custom devices that deliver superior comfort and performance.

S Series is the first full RIC product line to offer a beautiful, comfortable option for all levels of hearing loss — from mild to severe. The power and performance of Drive Architecture allows more patients to be fit than ever before with a RIC hearing solution that offers unparalleled feedback cancellation, directionality, environmental adaptation and comfort. When fit open, S Series has the widest fitting range and usable high-frequency bandwidth of any open fit instrument in its class. The line also includes the new S Series AP (Absolute Power), a patient-proven RIC that offers between 60 and 71dB of peak gain, making it the best performing and most powerful RIC on the market. Even patients with severe hearing loss can enjoy the discreet style, design and comfort of a RIC without sacrificing power and performance.

Tinnitus
Tinnitus

Reports of head noises are documented through out recorded history from mild cases to cases so extreme that speech from others is garbled. Causes are thought to have been evil spirits to curses and with the invention of gun powder loud noises.

More than 400 000 Canadians experience tinnitus, the perception of noise in one’s head and/or ears that has no external sound source, and which can be sporadic, intermittent, or continuous. For almost on third of these Canadians, the condition is serious and greatly impacts their lives. For some, tinnitus is incapacitating and interrupts
the day to day communication or may even cause it to stop.

Hundreds of tinnitus sounds have been identified: persistent ringing, roaring, whistling, buzzing, hissing, chirping, clicking and even unintelligible ‘voices’. More than one ‘sound’ can occur at one time, and although thought possible by many clinicians sounds can change. The problem can begin at any age, range from mild to severe and can affect people with normal hearing or those with hearing loss and it may itself induce a hearing loss by masking the frequency of sound it occurs at and even those frequencies near the occurrence.

Tinnitus, both permanent and temporary, has a variety of causes, but over 50% of cases involve some level of noise-induced hearing loss or sudden noise exposure. The condition can result from a sudden loud noise such as an explosion, concert, or exposure to excessive sound levels over a long period of time. It can also be caused by a head injury, whiplash, medications (such as high doses of ASA), and physical or emotional trauma. Google "Ototoxic medications" or ask your pharmacist.

Ototoxicity inducing tinnitus is more common in medications or medication interaction than you think and we encourage you to have one pharmacy to ensure interactions due not occur.

Tinnitus can be accompanied by a feeling of pressure or fullness in the head and ears, fatigue, irritability, poor concentration, panic or depression as well as social withdrawal.

A person with the symptoms of tinnitus should have their hearing tested, a hearing test is often the first step so that referral to the appropriate parties may be determined
for treatment, medication or therapy

Maskers, which are small hearing-aid-like devices that give off a more acceptable soft, shushing sound to cover up the tinnitus noises although current technologies in this have offered missed results new maskers are being test trialed in the USA today! And give hope to long time sufferers of this debilitating symptom.

For people whose lives are severely impacted by tinnitus, i.e., experiencing severe discomfort or inability to concentrate or sleep, specialists such as psychiatrist or those specializing in other therapies, medications, etc., may also help.

Sometimes tinnitus may be linked to lifestyle such as caffeine intake or stress or even a displacement or irritation of the Temporal Mandibular Joint.

If you suffer from Tinnitus take the first step and call today for a hearing test 403-209-1455
