Reports of head noises are documented through out recorded history from mild cases to cases so extreme that speech from others is garbled. Causes are thought to have been evil spirits to curses and with the invention of gun powder loud noises.
More than 400 000 Canadians experience tinnitus, the perception of noise in one’s head and/or ears that has no external sound source, and which can be sporadic, intermittent, or continuous. For almost on third of these Canadians, the condition is serious and greatly impacts their lives. For some, tinnitus is incapacitating and interrupts the day to day communication or may even cause it to stop.
Hundreds of tinnitus sounds have been identified: persistent ringing, roaring, whistling, buzzing, hissing, chirping, clicking and even unintelligible ‘voices’. More than one ‘sound’ can occur at one time, and although thought possible by many clinicians sounds can change. The problem can begin at any age, range from mild to severe and can affect people with normal hearing or those with hearing loss and it may itself induce a hearing loss by masking the frequency of sound it occurs at and even those frequencies near the occurrence.
Tinnitus, both permanent and temporary, has a variety of causes, but over 50% of cases involve some level of noise-induced hearing loss or sudden noise exposure. The condition can result from a sudden loud noise such as an explosion, concert, or exposure to excessive sound levels over a long period of time. It can also be caused by a head injury, whiplash, medications (such as high doses of ASA), and physical or emotional trauma. Google "Ototoxic medications" or ask your pharmacist.
Ototoxicity inducing tinnitus is more common in medications or medication interaction than you think and we encourage you to have one pharmacy to ensure interactions due not occur.
Tinnitus can be accompanied by a feeling of pressure or fullness in the head and ears, fatigue, irritability, poor concentration, panic or depression as well as social withdrawal.
A person with the symptoms of tinnitus should have their hearing tested, a hearing test is often the first step so that referral to the appropriate parties may be determined for treatment, medication or therapy
Maskers, which are small hearing-aid-like devices that give off a more acceptable soft, shushing sound to cover up the tinnitus noises although current technologies in this have offered missed results new maskers are being test trialed in the USA today! And give hope to long time sufferers of this debilitating symptom.
For people whose lives are severely impacted by tinnitus, i.e., experiencing severe discomfort or inability to concentrate or sleep, specialists such as psychiatrist or those specializing in other therapies, medications, etc., may also help.
Sometimes tinnitus may be linked to lifestyle such as caffeine intake or stress or even a displacement or irritation of the Temporal Mandibular Joint.
